Sightseeing in Gangtok: Literally Gangtok is a prominent Buddhist site nestled among the high peaks of Himalayas. The city was made the capital of Sikkim in 1894. Some of the major attractions in and around Gangtok are Tsomgo Lake, Nathu-La-Pass, Hanuman Tok, Rumtek Monastery etc.
The Gangtok Ropeway: It takes passengers tothe highest point in the city of Gangtok, covering a distance of about one kilometer in only ten minutes. Each cabin accommodates 24 passengers. The lower terminal station is located at Deorali market, the intermediate terminal at Nam-Nang and the upper terminal station is below the secretariat. Tourist coming here can enjoy the panoramic view and the thrilling rise as the Ropeway goes over the city.
Flora and Fauna Sanctuaries: The real glory of Sikkim lies in its breathtaking array of flowers. Sikkim’s geographical positioning has gifted it a repository of over 5000 species of angiosperm. Forests of magnolia, blue poppies, gentians create a spell-binding floral spectacle. Two of the best places to observe them are the Deorali orchid Sanctuary in South Gangtok and Kyongnosia Alpine Sanctuary approx an hour from Gangtok on the way to Tsomgo Lake and Nathu La.
Nathu La Pass and the Old Silk Route: Located at an altitude of 14,450 ft, the Nathu La Pass is on the Indo-China Border, five kilometer to the north of the Jelep La Pass. The place is covered with snow throughout the year. It is one of the highest roads and tranquil place to visit. Advance permission is required to visit this place.
Yuksom and the Dzongri Trail: Sikkim is paradise for trekkers. If you are up for the challenge then once you go for the trek from Yukson to Dzongri peak and further to Goecha peak. This is the most popular trek in Sikkim. The wonderful trek path takes you through the unspoiled forests, magnificent rhododendron gardens and mighty rivers.
