About North Sikkim Tourism
North Sikkim District comprises the valleys of Lachen, Lachung, Dzongu and Tolung. It has an area about 4,226 square kilometers and a population of 31,000. The region is famous for the Buddhist monasteries, Phensong and Phodong.
Major tourist attractions include the Phodong Monastery (one of the six main monasteries of Sikkim), Yumthang.
Excursions in North Sikkim
Gurudongmar Lake: Located at an altitude of over 18,000 ft, this is one of the holy lakes of Sikkim, revered both by the Buddhist and the Hindus. The color of the lake remains milky all throughout the year and it is said that Guru Padmasambhava had touched the lake while he visited Tibet from this area. The lake is around 150 Km from Gangtok.
Bhim Nala Waterfalls: Located on the Lachung – Yumthang Valley trek route, surrounded by lush green forests and high peaked mountains, the region an ideal base for trekking and mountaineering. Tashi View Point, Kabi Lungchok, Phodong, Naga Waterfalls, Lachen, Mangan and Chungthang are nearby.
Barmelli Falls: One of the magnificent waterfalls on the way to Phamtam village, this picturesque locale is about 90 minutes’ drive from Phamtam village. This region offers the best of Sikkim village life and its flora and fauna.
Seven Sisters Waterfalls: Situated near Bridge #5(Menrongong) on the Lachung – Yumthang Valley trek route, the entire area is covered with dense forests and towering hills. Nearby tourist destinations are Phodong, Lachen, Lachung Monastery, Mangan and Chungthang. The region is ideal for trekking.
Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary: Nestled in the Lachung Valley midway on the road between Lachung and Yumthang, the sanctuary is about 137 Km from Gangtok. It is bounded on its southern border by the Yakchey La, on the northern border by the Yumthang Valley, on the east by the Chuba-Sagochen mountain ranges and on the west by part of Chomzomei Tso Extending up to Lava Pass.
The sanctuary is renowned for its unique abundance of rhododendron trees and shrubs. The best seasons to visit are March – May and October – December.
